Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium spp. (research) 1 01.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Well made thick films - slightly different amounts of blood used but both would stain well. Remember to allow to air dry properly before staining. You may used some heat from a fan or hairdryer to speed the drying process but DO NOT overheat as this fixes the smear to the slide. No fixation is used to allow the blood to haemolyse during the staining process thereby rendering the parasites visible against a pale, clean background. Compare with other Plasmodium spp. (research) and Plasmodium vivax (research) slides which have been prepared using different amounts of blood to determine the best method to diagnose the parasite infection. It is best to make the smears from native blood (ie. without anti-coagulant) as anticoagulant can distort the parasites.
